apps that need push notifications get problems: Google wants to force all apps on to use its proprietary service Firebase for push notifications.
That's why we need F-Droid and/or based smartphone OS without Google.

@datenteiler It seems it's time to get back to granny phones, without Android.

@datenteiler It is just a matter of time, the #librem5 and the #PinePhone are behind the corner...

@datenteiler Why is this going around now? This is pretty old news. Not that it's not important, it's one of the main challenges for a FOSS Android usage, but still pretty weird

Okay, didn't know that this one is pretty old. For me it was new. Thank you for the info.

@datenteiler @Matter I knew about this two weeks ago, so you're not allowed to share this with others who might know about it! :thonk:

@hund @datenteiler haha this is an issue years in the making, I was really asking how come people were talking about it all of a sudden (not saying they shouldn't share it, on the contrary! it's very important)

@Matter @datenteiler I know. I'm was just making fun of the fact that how humans in general work. I see this phenomena all the time. Probably even me fall for it sometimes. :P

@hund @Matter @datenteiler something something.. An xkcd for everything?

I actually didn't learn about this until a few weeks ago. Although I've never developed for Android so I guess I didn't need to know.

@rune @Matter @datenteiler I'm pretty sure there's an xkcd for me reacting to the fact that there's an xkcd for everything. :P

@stefka @sailfishosnews
I like pretty much. And despite Sailfish is mostly , unfortunately, it has added closed-source components afaik. Hope they will fix this in the near future.

@datenteiler how does F-Droid integrate FOSS notifications back though?

@succfemboi @datenteiler there's a project/initiative led by @Bubu, one of the current main people working on F-Droid: and

This will require major cooperation with for example the Matrix project, Nextcloud, etc to get it off the ground.

@Matter @Bubu @datenteiler

@kaniini any thoughts on using that as reference for the Charisma web broker?
@succfemboi @Bubu @Matter @datenteiler however charisma is probably useful for building an alternative to GCM. part of why it exists is to allow for alternatives to GCM.

@Tutanota for example is using SSE (Server Sent Events). And afaik is @Mastodon using SSE to update their timeline in real time, too.

@datenteiler @Mastodon @Tutanota but will push notifications still render on Android if sent via SSE?

@datenteiler I see this as a good thing. A lot of developers are lazy and rely on the proprietary Google Play Services for their push notifications.

With this move from Google more developers will hopefully look around for better ways to handle their push notifications.

We don't need Google Play Services, or Google for that matter. Google knows that and that's why they're trying to push you over into their walled garden of proprietary services.
