#FOSS apps that need push notifications get problems: Google wants to force all apps on #Android to use its proprietary service Firebase for push notifications.
That's why we need F-Droid and/or #Linux based smartphone OS without Google. #UBports
@datenteiler It seems it's time to get back to granny phones, without Android.
@datenteiler Why is this going around now? This is pretty old news. Not that it's not important, it's one of the main challenges for a FOSS Android usage, but still pretty weird
Okay, didn't know that this one is pretty old. For me it was new. Thank you for the info.
@succfemboi @datenteiler there's a project/initiative led by @Bubu, one of the current main people working on F-Droid: https://prototypefund.de/project/open-source-push-service-fuer-android-apps/ and https://gitlab.com/foss-push/planning
This will require major cooperation with for example the Matrix project, Nextcloud, etc to get it off the ground.
@succfemboi I'm not sure what you mean by this
@succfemboi @Mastodon @datenteiler Push without GCM works great for us, you can read deatils on the @fdroidorg blog: https://f-droid.org/en/2018/09/03/replacing-gcm-in-tutanota.html
@datenteiler I see this as a good thing. A lot of developers are lazy and rely on the proprietary Google Play Services for their push notifications.
With this move from Google more developers will hopefully look around for better ways to handle their push notifications.
We don't need Google Play Services, or Google for that matter. Google knows that and that's why they're trying to push you over into their walled garden of proprietary services.
