connectors are like the very worst part of EE
- you can see how they are shaped, measure them, and describe them in a few words, but you aren't allowed to sell reproductions because of patents and shit
- most expensive part of many devices despite being electrically trivial
- really easy for them to suck ass and break
- there are 976 competing standards, and none of them are interoperable
minimum viable labor pools
imagine a workforce that works 8 hour days. a process or device improves efficiency by 50%, potentially reducing each worker’s workday to 4 hours without lowering pay. the work week could be halved, or otherwise modified to balance a shorter obligation with improved outputs.
but the boss just fires half the workforce and pockets the difference. the workforce becomes brittle as its constituency shrinks, but it doesn’t have to. the boss chooses disenfranchisement.
I made the mistake of dipping into the wilw disaster again. Now there’s people spouting vitriol at each other in Eugen’s mentions. Might as well go back to Twitter, FFS.
None of you came out of this looking good. I still don’t know why wilw is a transphobe (Randi’s blocklist, yeah yeah), but this was mob action & it was super gross.
Oppressed minorities can be dicks too, who knew. Imma take a break from here.
meta, dunking, tone policing
Leaving aside the question of whether the target(s) deserve it, or whether the people who do it should be banned for it, what purpose does dunking/harassing serve? Like seriously, what do you think it's going to accomplish?
People *are not rational*. If you want them to be better, harassment is counter-productive, because it makes them defensive and less likely to listen to you.
That said, what's done is done, I'm not going to dwell on it, and neither should you.
Because it's tempting to let it happen again when the next person you don't like comes along.
There are lots of people on the fediverse I can think of who I really, really, really don't like, and I really don't think harassment is the answer for them either.
When I said earlier that I lamented people only cared cause wilw was a celeb, that was meant as a jab at the people who don't say a word when non-celebs get harassed, which btw, is itself not really okay. I believe it should always be denounced. People can be asked nicely to leave, but not ever harassed away.
It hasn't happened in a long while, but one person can literally ruin your day, by sending their friends after you, and that's not okay tbh
And I mean, bofa cheered it on, and they're basically twitter culture, and I for one do not want to see more of THAT brand of bullshit
Trust me, it ain't so funny when it happens to you
And it's happened to me
I mean, at least wilw had people who had his back
I didn't even have that
Privilege isn't a sin, but it's a responsibility and a debt to be repaid https://dustycloud.org/blog/on-privilege/
> we are told that if we want it that badly we should “fork” — Github issue list speak for “duplicate the entire project, code the features you want, and run it yourself.”
> It’s a power play, because we wouldn’t be so desperate if we could code it ourselves — they have all the power and we have to beg them to help us. And they could help us, but they get to decide whether or not we get the features we need.
