Hi Mastodon, I killed my Twitter account a few weeks ago, and 15 minutes ago I pulled the plug on Facebook.
I wanna be your friend! We could talk about #bicycling or #Cheesemaking or #Baking or maybe #Writing? Maybe we could play frisbee and get a water-ice later?
How do I get into this scene?
@Trev Just returned from a visit with the in-laws. Oh god, so many Gelatis! I actually live in New Mexico. (Ask me about green chile and forest fires!)
@deaduncledave Well then, howdy neighbor! East Valley near Phoenix here.
I moved here from DC a couple years ago and I miss taking weekend trips up the NE Corridor
@Trev Howdy Neighbor! I visited the valley a few years back for a swedish couch, found a great Ethiopian joint called Cafe Lalibella. How're you enjoying the heat?
@deaduncledave Rather this than DC winter, honestly! I'm well acclimated at this point and it doesn't make my artificial parts ache
@Trev Bueno! And thanks for the Welcome!
@deaduncledave Welcome!! You are in the right place, for sure. ๐ค
@hfrazey Thanks! Already I'm liking the neighbors!
@deaduncledave welcome, fren!
@h3xtacy Thanks for having me!
Welcome to the Fediverse!
Do you do goat cheese? It's the only animal cheese I can eat
@funbreaker I'd LOVE to make goat cheese. Goat milk is hard to come by where I live, but oh bog is it yummy. Have you had any vegan cheeses? I've not myself, but am told they're nice.
@deaduncledave
They're not quite the same, but they're still pretty decent. The brand I really want to try is Miyoko's Creamery. the cheeses are cultured!
@funbreaker Vegan Moz. Brilliant. I'd love to try that some time.
Idle curiousity and nosy question, are you allergic to cows milk?
@deaduncledave
I'm only lactose intolerant, but it's still really annoying and distruptive, considering the usual symptoms. It's not triggered as badly with non-bovine dairy.
@funbreaker Oof, that's a shame. I'm not too good with dairy myself, but the yogurt I make helps.
Also, my partner has come to accept that I eat things that're bad for me, and she still loves me despite my self-destructive behavior.
@deaduncledave ultrafiltered milk is also a big help, because, it's like Lactaid, big with a lot of the sugar that results from the lactase processing has benn removed so I don't get a mouthful of liquid that tastes like sweetened plastic. I don't know of any cheesemakers that use it though.
@funbreaker Ah, right, I've also heard of twice-fermented cheeses that are frankly a challenge to eat, but apparently friendly to folks with lactose intolerance.
@deaduncledave and that vegan moz will be fun to try making, Daiya's is not up to snuff
@deaduncledave CHEESEMAKING?!?!
@maenad Oh bog, I love cheese so much. SO MUCH. I just bought an honest-to-goodness cheese press and discovered I'm out of culture and can't use it yet. ;_;
@deaduncledave I have only ever made ricotta and while it was delicious it wasn't exactly smooth
@maenad I hear ya. Ricotta is challenging. Feta and Goudas are definitely more my speed at present.
@deaduncledave #introductions is a great way to start.
Quite a few of us have done so. it helps :) enjoy
@ArtistMarciaX Cheers! I think I wrote one of those once under another instance, but I suppose there isn't a law against writing another.
@deaduncledave nope! do it!
When you can :)
@deaduncledave Welcome to mastodon. I cycled everywhere I went for 3 years, rain or shine, and I baked professionally for a time.
What is a water-ice, it's a charming term?
I also destroyed my facebook, linkedin, twitter, everything but this. It's not bad once you get into it.
@c25l You may know the term Italian Ice, which is the not-philly term for the same thing. I ate a lot of them last week on vacation. ๐คค
I'm an amateur baker, currently working on my sourdough and flatbreads now that it's the hot season.
And yeah, I got right sick of the entire lot. Makes me miss LiveJournal in a way.
@deaduncledave @wohali hello! Some of us use #mastobikes for cycling stuff
@deaduncledave is my friend and is good at it.
@deaduncledave Welcome to the fediverse! Here's your starter ๐
@weemadhamish Cheers!
Also, is your handle a Feegle name?
@deaduncledave Possibly, but my standard fee for revealing that is a wee dram of Special Sheep Liniment.
@deaduncledave I have no idea! If you figure it out, let me know.
By being friendly! Which you've already done very well! I think you'll like Mastodon, I'm a fairly new user myself. My wife and I are trying to get into cheesemaking, I'd love to chat about that.
@AWheat Cheers! I'm very much a neophyte, and doing it mostly at the suggestion of my wife, but so far it's fun. The equipment seems to play a big role, including having a strong cheese press. I just got one from New England Cheese company, and am rarin' to use it.
We've been doing reenactment for a while, and we're learning from a guy who specializes in the 1700s method. I want to get a real modern press at some point, because it has to be easier.
@AWheat I was doing the re-enactment method with wicker and some plate-weights I had laying around. PITA so it was. I recommend a dutch press, which is what my friend who knows a helluva lot more about the topic than I uses.
@deaduncledave do you have a sourdough starter?
@dave I does, home-made as well. It may be a cliche, but I call it Audrey.
@deaduncledave I've only ever made stove-top ricotta, but I do have a couple of frisbees around here somewhere
@deaduncledave looks like you're doing fine.
Hi!
@deaduncledave hey i am zero good at baking but i love food talk and do catering so I'll follow!
@deaduncledave ok that's a lie I'm pretty decent at baking but cooking is my real passion
@deaduncledave look at all the trans girls
see how they don't give a shit?
it's they're way to say they love you
just talk about what you love and you will find peopl keen to engage
@Efi I see and accept their love with hugs and awkward high-fives. Oh, I've also got a desk sign that says "Safe space, Ally, Likes to Help."
@deaduncledave Heya! Welcome!
A couple things to get into Masto:
- Write an intro post about yourself with the #introductions hashtag.
- Pepper your posts with appropriate hashtags.
- Make a habit of searching on #introduction, #introductions, and topics you dig.
- Reply to folks
- Look around at some of the topic-specific servers and their local timelines.
@deaduncledave oh it's easy. Follow me, then wonder why you did that, then just sort of lean into it.
You're here now. Hello!
@deaduncledave so you're from Philly, then? ๐
