In my thinking it comes down to the more freedom we have with creating type level functions the farther away the typechecker sees the error and the less the error message helps. That's why I add top level type sigs. to client code especially when it's using a lot of overloaded type class methods.
We have the knowledge of the ages at our fingertips but can't cure eye floaters.
