Hey fediverse, recommend me a movie that's:
- a heady sci-fi joint
- at least 30 years old
- molasses-slow in pace
- not in English is a bonus
@ajroach42 @derek_g I showed my kids The Black Hole, which I hadn't seen since I was very young. That movie is WEIRD.
@ajroach42 @derek_g @seanl Wow, when I was 6, I guess, I read the comic book adaptation (or maybe the Disney Read-Along storybook adaptation?) while on a trip to my grandparents'. I remember V.I.N.Cent and B.O.B.
@gcupc
I read the comic adaptation after getting it as a gift.
The movie, when i saw it years later, was... odd.
@ajroach42 @derek_g @seanl
@gcupc @ajroach42 @derek_g @seanl
Maybe the studio wanted Star Wars while the director wanted to make 2001?
@seanl @ajroach42 I haven't even heard of this one. That poster has sold me on it though.
@ajroach42 @derek_g I completely agree on Solaris!
@ajroach42 This is a friggin' masterpiece. I hope I get the chance to see a print one day.
@derek_g I mean 2001 a space odyssey ticks all these boxes except that the dialog is in English (But most of the film is dialog free, so...)
@derek_g if you haven't seen it already, I highly recommend Metropolis (1927)
@checkervest I need to revisit Metropolis because I think they found new footage and released a more complete cut? I'll have to double-check.
@checkervest Yup! I have not seen the 2010 cut, aka The Complete Metropolis. I'll have to track that down.
@derek_g absolutely. The Argentina footage really fleshes out some of the minor characters and clarifies some of the plot points that were left out or rushed in previous cuts.
@derek_g Solaris. Andrei Tartovsky, 1972.
@derek_g Both of Jean Cocteau's films Belle et le Bête and Orphée fit these except that they're heady fantasy instead of heady sci find. Also, little bonus factoid, Jean Cocteau was very the gay.
@stephen Orphée is great (good analog SFX) and his BatB has been on my watchlist forever. This might be the impetus for me to actually see it.
@derek_g Lots of good long hallway dream sequences and object symbolism. ☁️ 🕯 💤Di$ney obviously ripped their entire concept from him. 😒 Oh, if you're going to watch it, you might want to see if you can get the score that Philip Glass did for syncing. I haven't managed to watch the whole thing synched but it's on my todo list.
@stephen That sounds rad.
@stjohn Dark Star is great, and Carpenter is a full-on master. But I've never even heard of Kin-Dza-Dza!, and my interest is piqued.
@derek_g "La Planète Sauvage" is from 1973, and fairly deliberately paced.
@bstacey That is one of my favourite animated films of all time. I like it so much I made a still of it my profile header!
@derek_g This is what I get for not clicking through to see people's profiles! 😃
@derek_g Chris Marker, La Jetée.
Otherwise, I agree iwth @ajroach42 about Solaris. Arguably, Stalker is also "sci-fi".
@derek_g @ajroach42 P.S. well, La Jetée is pretty short, but the frame rate is molasses-slow :-D
@sciss @ajroach42 La Jetee and Stalker are so damn good.
@derek_g Star Trek The Motion Picture ticks a lot of these boxes.
@derek_g with the added benefit of being gaudy and incomprehensibly disco.
@ajroach42 Oh snap, I didn't know Doug Trumbull worked on this. Sweet.
@nocko Silent Running is a wild time. And I can't believe I still haven't seen Logan's Run yet. I really should.
@derek_g So many good options! A few recent finds:
Aelita Queen of Mars - best art direction ever (1924!).
Phase IV - macro photography of (super-intelligent) ants is scary.
Zardoz - this movie is so 70s they had to hold it down.
@KnowPresent Those last two are great, but I've never even heard of the first one. That looks rad. Onto the watchlist it goes.
