"Just as the tobacco industry gained decades of huge profits by obfuscating the dangers of smoking, the oil industry secured decades of profits ... by helping to create a fake controversy over climate science that deceived and victimized many policymakers, as well as much of the public."

-- David Kaiser and Lew Wasserman, from The Rockefeller Family Fund Takes on ExxonMobile, in Best American Non-Required Reading 2017, pages 279-80

@dogtrax Why did this controversy really only take hold in America? Do you mean the American oil industry specifically? There are climate skeptics in Norway too, but not among the ruling class.

@thor American oil companies invested in, eh, research to debunk climate change, and then worked on the political scene with that ‘science’ in hand to sway public policy. See results: our US Secretary of State is the same man who ran that same oil company, and the top admin team has plenty of climate change doubters, including the one in charge of environmental policy. It’s a mess, created for the prospect of profit margins.
