Could have multiple sizes of 2d memory arrays of computed values. As you move everything is shifted and the extra bit of edge is computed from the map data.(which does not have to be an array anymore)

There is actually a trick for translating a whole array by moving the pointer instead of the data.. Forgot the specifics..

Also of course could put objects in a grid lists sorted by top-visible-z for some occlusion.
