Released an update to Seymour (my Apache Cordova build tool) today, so you can use it to update your config.xml values using envvars without running the build steps. Might make it more useful for Ionic users.

Canada politics; Queer safety in school

Currently, by law, teachers in Alberta can't out queer students to their parents by telling them that they joined a gay-straight alliance at school

The right-wing party in Alberta is actually making it part of their platform that they want to make this legal

"Vote for us, we'll legalize outing queer kids again"

I don't have words for how reckless and dangerous this is

First lesson: if I'm in the crosswalk and you nearly hit me, you were definitely in the wrong. Always.

The internet used to be a city: it had its weird bohemian districts, its flea markets, its high-rises and back alleys. Now it's just a shopping mall, and I miss my old city so much

You: "Hey Darryl, can you import these Trello-alike tasks into our new OpenProject installation?"
Me: "Probably... it has an API"

Me later, reading:
OpenProject is a fork of ChiliProject, which is a fork of Redmine.

2018 has been a bit of a rollercoaster, and easily the least rewarding year for me. Feeling pretty disappointed and frustrated with how things turned out.
Trying to be hopeful for what's to come, but it's hard and nothing feels certain anymore ๐Ÿ˜”

I see my sister's been decorating the fridge at home again...

Happy day off due to societal and governmental codification of the dominant religion's major observances :)

Wednesday. 16:30. Somehow I'm the only person still in the office ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

Feels weird to see myself as an old fogey pining for the days of MySpace and Neopets, when people made their own web pages with garish colors and backgrounds, and to know that younger folks today probably have no frame of reference for what I'm talking about.

It's interesting to think of the concept of the "free and open web" as a generational thing. I can't imagine that that phrase means much to someone born in Generation Z, who grew up with "the internet" meaning an array of chiclet-sized apps built by companies in Silicon Valley.

Web development's reaction to Microsoft abandoning EdgeHTML is basically "we hated your browser but please don't stop making it".

"The [desktop] view of browser market share is telling. Thereโ€™s Chrome, and thereโ€™s everybody else. Everybody else can be split into two groups: Firefox and the pit of despair: a larger group of small browsers with no meaningful market share."

Definitely feels like I just witnessed the first step in the demise of the web platform ecosystem ๐Ÿ˜ž

This is pretty similar to how I felt back when Opera dropped their Presto engine back in 2014, but I think it's a much worse situation now

Can somebody please dispel this EdgeHTML rumour so that I can stop feeling existential angst about the future of the web platform ecosystem and get back to focusing on my job?

I'm saddened by the news about Edge moving to chromium. It's a death knell for the web.

Part of the Web's strength comes from it's diversity of platforms. When there is only one way to access the web, controlled by a single interest, as far as I am concerned the web is over.

Last year over 16,000 JavaScript developers participated in npm's JavaScript ecosystem survey, giving amazing insights into what our community is doing and where trends are going. Now it's that time again! Participate in the 2018 survey right here:
