Measuring, I'll need 2x30ft lengths of cat5e cable. 1 used, 1 spare. It will be exposed to the outside, but possibly in conduit.

If it's in conduit, does it have to be anything special? Just usual cat5e cable should suffice?

@dvl I'd go with outdoor cable which is more resistant to temperature differences and moisture. There's also special rodent protected ones, not sure if that still is needed in a conduit though, unless the rodents live in said conduit as well. :-)

@dvl How opaque is the conduit to UV?

God people are cautious these days. 15yrs ago in soviet russia we used plain cat5 for 30+ meter links between 20 storey buildings. Sun, rain, snow, wind, birds, whatever - it worked for years.

The worst problem were some nylon clamps which attached utp to the metal string broke over time. But I bet it could live fine even without being attached to the string:)
