@emilyriesbeck have you ever done a quest that had a strong mystery element to it?

@RobStorm hmm. Sort of. We did a groundhog day DnD campaign where we had to figure out how the rules of time travel worked. It was pretty fun. I also always like to pepper a little mystery into my games.

@emilyriesbeck cool, yeah I've been trying to do research into what makes the best kind of mysteries for games and the mechanics around it

@RobStorm hmm. i would say the problem with some mysteries or "puzzles" in games is that if the players get stumped, then oftentimes the game hits a brick wall and can't continue. So i try to avoid binary "puzzles" that have one solution. That being said, i do like to have some things the plaer can "solve" or "figure out." I oftentimes throw out my own worldbuilding if a player's idea is better.

@RobStorm for example, i play a superpowered monster teen in Masks and one session the GM had us up against the classic "one of us will tell the truth one of us will lie" riddle. We solved it by having me ask one of them "if i pound you into dust for not just telling us the answer will you feel pain?" That intimidated them enough to just let us go.

@emilyriesbeck could have multiple clues that lead to the solution. Also I guess in an RPG you could have consequences depending on how correct or incorrect they are?

@RobStorm yup, that's certainly a way of going about it. I prefer to play a more fluid game but that's not the only way to play.

Oh yay another RPGer. Welcome to the club! It's probably my favourite hobby that I do the least, I do more reading of worldbuilding/rpg stuff than playing it these days. For now, anyway!

@emilyriesbeck Sweet it is one of my favorite things to discuss as well!
