Maybe looking at comics is also useful, since they have this long history of fanfic becoming canon & bits of canon being thrown out, fan discussion getting varying levels of canonicity based on political expedience, & long complicated narratives chunked arbitrarily and about which only the exceptional bits are remembered.
Also this perspective makes it easy to compare Grant Morrison's run on any comic to Revelations.
