Salty about ripoff-y food packaging

This was... not what I expected.

Salty about ripoff-y food packaging

@estebanm wow, it gets crazier every day. You were lucky that the backside of the roll was present and there wasn't some carton pushing two tiny pieces of pancake in a round shape :D

Supermarkets.. the bane of good food.

Salty about ripoff-y food packaging

@estebanm btw, this simple taco on its own has more ingredients than an entire Christmas feast.

One would expect it to consist of flour + egg. Done.

Salty about ripoff-y food packaging

@estebanm it's a double ripoff.. looks like a taco, feels like a taco, but is some industrialized substance made on the cheap.

The hole in the middle symbolically represents where real taco used to be.

Salty about ripoff-y food packaging

@humanetech Well, it's pretty evident what it is (not in the pictures I posted, but in reality). It even has "wrap" in its name!

I didn't really expect any gourmet food, just wanted something easy and quick to eat while at the park. But the hole in the middle... that _is_ really shitty.

Salty about ripoff-y food packaging

@humanetech It was a convenience store, which I'm not sure makes it better or worse than a supermarket 😂

It did have a bunch of things inside, but the ingredient list is... longer than expected, yeah. The word "taco" means something completely different in Norway BTW, this was more of a wrap (very) vaguely inspired in Mexican cuisine.

@estebanm it is both hilarious when you find out that you have been pranked, as well as ultra sad that this is now our food.

In Netherlands we have a consumer TV program ("Keuringsdienst van Waarde") that investigates in a funny way all the ways in which we are tricked.

Fake wine, fake cheese, meat pumped up with brine, old cheese that is not old at all, etcetera.

We fall for the convenience and just go with the flow 🤷‍♂️

@humanetech @estebanm

and there was the whole horsemeat scandal, from "Draap trading" (draap = paard), and the chap had *already* been nicked once for doing it but because he had been previously targeting the halal market his crimes were ignored by many...

Salty about ripoff-y food packaging

@estebanm btw, this portions-getting-smaller trend, for same price of course, is called "shrinkflation". But this is a particularly nasty Deception Pattern (aka 'dark pattern') you caught here.

Salty about ripoff-y food packaging

@estebanm such practices should be prohibited by law...

re: Salty about ripoff-y food packaging

@copyme @estebanm In some jurisdictions this actually is prohibited by law. In Germany as example.

Salty about ripoff-y food packaging

@estebanm that's why in most reasonable legal systems the cost-per-kg must be shown very clearly. Even better if foods must be sorted accogingly on shelves.

Salty about ripoff-y food packaging

@federico3 Yeah, maybe, although I wouldn't have noticed tbh. And I'm not sure I would know which weight to expect off the top of my head.

It's just pretty shitty business practices. Whatever laws are in place, they would just do something that is strictly-speaking legal, but... 😓

Salty about ripoff-y food packaging

@federico3 @estebanm

in most of Europe this is shown in big supermarkets (you have to look closely at shelf labels) but I think smaller stores are exempt from all of the legislation. What is worse, is that the manufacturers have (at least begrudgingly) complied with the relatively strict food safety labelling laws of Europe; then have used the label to hide the ripoff (almost as if that has been done out of spite)

re: Salty about ripoff-y food packaging

@estebanm I'd take that back for a refund.

re: Salty about ripoff-y food packaging

@dredmorbius Actually that might have worked because it really is deceiving, but in my circumstances it wasn't worth it.

@estebanm Actually, do you mind if I use this for some stupid meme jokes? I keep getting inspiration :P

(Totally fine if you'd rather I didn't, of course!)

@VincentTunru Go ahead! And thanks for asking 😄

But do send links to all of them 😛

Salty about ripoff-y food packaging

@estebanm That’s atrocious marketing.

Salty about ripoff-y food packaging

@robert It's from Veggie de Luca, if that helps. It's super nice to have a "safe" convenience store with a certain variety in that area... but some of the things they have are atrocious. And Deli de Luca prices of course 😓

Salty about ripoff-y food packaging

@estebanm I really want to visit the Veggie de Luca. They apparently carry quite a few exotic vegan brands. But I’ll be very cautious if they’re presented like that. 😓

Salty about ripoff-y food packaging

@robert Well, the stuff to bring home with you should be safe I guess, and they have some salads with almost completely transparent packaging, so you know better what you get into... but those wraps were a disappointment, size-wise. I seem to recall the taste wasn't bad (for a packaged wrap bought in a convenience store, that is!), though.
