Fediverse Report

Calling all fediverse Developers! This Monday will be a first meeting of fediverse developers to organise and discuss practical implementations of fediverse software. It focuses on practical tips and best practices for real-world interoperability.

Please boost so we can get a good representation of all the different fediverse software projects present!

Driving force behind this first meetup is Owncast's @gabek

@fediversereport @gabek Here's your first representation problem: You're on mastodon.social. You can't see half the fediverse. Talk to p, talk to gleasonator.
Monday is a holiday here & that post too short notice for professionals. Hmm.
There IS a lot left to do in real-world interoperability, moreso in privacy (Mastodon DMs are not PMs, really), ergonomics & accessibility.

@fediversereport @gabek rewrite the servers with as few dependrncies as possible! all in rust? c? c++?

@gabek hmm I am looking for language 19 for an unrelated rosetta stone like project. I will look into golang. #ReduceTheLayersOfCruff #ReduceTheDependencies

@fediversereport @gabek events.nixnet.services 's version of mobilizon has a bug that gives out the incorrect content-type (fixed in upstream) for responses so i can't interact with it using Pleroma.

@tusooa What kind of interaction would you normally be able to perform from Pleroma to Mobilizon? I've been trying to do more research into Mobilizon's features.
@gabek At the very least it's an Event object, which Pleroma supports, so it should be able to display it just like other status types (Note, Question, etc.).
@tusooa I also use Pleroma but have never seen an Event object rendered in the UI. Do you have an example?
@tusooa Interesting. You seem to be one of two people on the entire Fediverse that know anything about Mobilizon! Maybe you can help me here too: https://github.com/owncast/owncast/issues/2375 ?

There exists an existing FediVerse developer community at SocialHub with a process to ensure interoperability called Fediverse Enhancement Proposals (FEP).

How does this differ from it? Are there any advantages?

SocialHubSocialHubWhere ActivityPub developers coordinate their efforts to make the Fediverse a great space for cooperation

@helge @gabek Good question! The FEPs are a formal process of how to expand a standard, which is good and important. But there is quite a bit of interoperability that is already put in the standard, but not always implemented on an individual project level. Getting developers in touch with each other is a helpful way of encouraging the practical implementations of what is already there.

@fediversereport@mastodon.social @gabek@social.gabekangas.com right off the bat I'd like to see better support for authenticating with existing accounts.

I pulled up the event page and wanted to mark myself as participating. Had to have an account on an existing mobilizon instance, so I signed up for an account. I have so many accounts on things, a sort-of account fatigue.

Having some standard method to sign up on fediverse apps would be so nice, in my opinion.
