Introducing Fediverse 201, a new series in which I take a deeper dive in all the other cool products and services on the fediverse that go beyond microblogging, and talk to the creators about their product.
In this first edition: Owncast!
#owncast is a free and open source live video streaming server, that can also connect to the rest of the #fediverse in a variety of ways.

@fediversereport Thanks for this! Looking really forward to this series :)
@fediversereport Very interesting article about @owncast & @gabek!
Yeah, streaming content to the masses can be complex & costly, depending on your setup as well as your audience. I think this is where centralized services excel at compared to decentralized ones.
Even #Matrix (which I am a fan of) is iffy at this. But I do believe the decentralized streaming services can reach regions that are often overlooked or restricted (like #China ) which is why they are necessary.
@darnell @fediversereport @gabek It doesn't need to be costly or complex. One of Owncast's primary goals is to demystify running your own live streams. The centralized services want you to think they're they only options, and unfortunately most people believe them.
@owncast @fediversereport @gabek Can Owncast handle streaming to hundreds or thousands of people simultaneously‽ Or conduct multiple people in a video streaming to thousands of viewers online‽ Or tens of thousands across multiple devices & apps‽ (web, iPhone, Android, iPad, etcetera).
I ask as there is a need for an affordable decentralized solution for this, & all of the options are pricy for most people.
