fediversereport.com · Zuckerberg on Threads and ActivityPubMark Zuckerberg recently gave an interview with The Verge, in which he made a variety of comments on Threads and ActivityPub. In this article I take a look at what this says about his vision on Threads, the fediverse, and more.

@fediversereport A good write up there. Zuck makes for an intetesting interview by not sounding too unreasonable (unlike the head of some other corporate social media companies) but then that's his skill in terms of sounding more reasonable than his actions may end up being. We can only see.

@fediversereport

it’s interesting the attempt of having newspapers, tv and whatever media as external media content, that can be sucked into Threads but without having to deal with it, or pay for it.

@luca There are some interesting lines to draw here to the Canadian Online News Act, which forces Meta and Google to pay for linking to Canadian news articles. In response Meta has banned all links to all news articles from Meta's services.

It's not something I got around to writing about in this specific article, but something I'm definitely keeping my eyes on.

@fediversereport interesting write up.

I agree with your interpretation that "interoperability is used to create value for Meta" but TBH, I don't have a lot against that. E.g. there are a lot of companies, such as commercial news organisations, that could setup a #Mastodon instance and use the offering there to drive traffic to their own website (and advertising).

In effect, I'm ok with #Threads trying to build the best #Fediverse experience, as long interoperability of content remains.

@gpollara @fediversereport I too am not shocked that Zuck's priorities are what is good for Meta. What my crystal ball doesn't show is whether it will be good, bad or indifferent for those who choose to federate with Threads. Put me in the camp of being somewhat wary, but basically wanting to wait and see.
