Just had an interesting grocery store encounter. We went there to cash in a bucket of pennies (money is definitely tight right now). On the way in, we were greeted by an older gentleman who asked how we were. My husband said, fine, just poor, gesturing to the bucket. A moment later, the man finds us and offers $20. We politely declined, but his kindness was encouraging. #Kindness #humanity
@kumya it was offered to my husband. He politely declined. It wasn’t for me to override his choice. Had the man insisted, he would have taken it and we would have paid it forward. Instead, they had a short, friendly discussion and that was it. No one was insulted on either side. And I’m sure this man will end up being just as kind to someone else.
@fernweh why didn’t you take the money and gave it to someone even more in need? I think it would not have “degraded” you as a person.
He probably really wanted to help and now thinks he might have offended you.
It’s not just about being thankful. It’s also about taking help.
I once gave a poor mother 20 bucks and said this money is only for her child. She gladly took it and when I met her again (several months later!!) she told me how happy the girl was because she had a toy now.
