Fesshole 🧻

Not saying I'm petty but I recently deleted a colouring game on my phone because it referred to Edinburgh as being part of England

@fesshole I wouldn't expect any less from you.

@fesshole I'd also look unfavorably upon anything that lumped my country in with England.

@fesshole That's not petty. Years ago, we removed a question card from our family's Trivial Pursuit because it said Wirral was in Liverpool.

@aroundthehills @fesshole how tee eff did that make it through

@fesshole There are three weeks in August when you'd be forgiven for thinking this.

@fesshole
An inobtrusive response to an insult?
Nothing petty about that... rather, low pitch, I'd say.

@fesshole That's not petty, that's Scottish ;-)

@fesshole since England is the largest constituent country of the UK, people pretend that the two are synonymous. Even my old social studies textbook doesn't tell the difference.

In fact, when I type England, my keyboard suggests using this flag 🇬🇧 instead of this flag 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿, despite the fact that the latter DOES exist in my version of Android. (It's Android 13 btw)

@resol @fesshole You’re good, no problem; but the more you learn about this the worse it gets

1- The unicode emoji database is overloaded with flags (I was surprised!) and the fact that the UK got its non-UN-member countries in, was a historic fluke. So many good ones are missing.

2- The long-term solution of making custom flags is … going about as well as the rest of generative AI

3- And the whole idea of auto-suggesting flags for countries is super risky, e.g. with this week in Syria

@whophd @fesshole they're basically just using the ISO 3166-1 whatever it's called and assign a flag to each entry on that list. The flags to which this doesn't apply are these: 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️🏴‍☠️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 (and I guess the EU and UN as well, but I'm actually not sure). If a completely new country shows up, chances are a new ISO code has to be made just for it. And if a country flag changes, it's gonna take a while before it's implemented in emoji form. And if you're stuck on an outdated version, you're basically SOL

@whophd @fesshole correction: the European Union and United Nations are indeed on the ISO list.

@resol @fesshole Yeah. So you see (perhaps?) why England is lucky to have its flag there.

Or my other point, being that flags in general can get dicey

The kind of people who wave the England flag would do it for different reasons than I would. So I basically never will. I don’t like this and it sucks but there’s nothing I can do.

@fesshole Not petty at all and nor would it be petty to write it in a 1 star review of the app.

@fesshole

I got rid of my Horrible History books because they said Sir Alec Issigonis was Italian!
