In a lot of ways, today doesn’t feel like 2016 to me - it feels like 2004 (which was my first election). The despair and heartbreak I feel today feels like that. The anger too. 2016 was a system shock. But 2004, the electorate decidedly rejected the values I held dear in favor of a proven con man and cadre of cronies and criminals. And there is something much more painful about that reality. When you have to acknowledge your work and your values weren’t enough. And maybe your tactics were wrong.
@film_girl Ugh, yeah, I'm feeling that pretty strongly this morning.
@film_girl Yeah, same. I'm heartbroken. My only solace is that he's very bad at fulfilling his campaign promises. I have faith that our constitution and justice system is strong enough to withstand it.
@jordan @film_girl he will not fail in 2025 like he did in 2017. He has the full force of SCOTUS, Congress, Heritage Foundation, Peter Thiel, Elon Musk, etc etc this time around
He has purged the Republican Party of dissent, and will soon purge the bureaucracy as well
In 2016 I had a sliver of hope that the democrats would finally wake up and do something for working people again
I no longer believe democrats or anyone else will have a shot at a free and fair election
@film_girl I JUST said this, almost verbatim to my wife. Could not agree more. 2004 was one of the worst heartbreakers I can remember (2000 was my first presidential vote)
@film_girl 2004 is an apt comparison. I was prepared for a loss yesterday (vs the shock of 2016), but the magnitude this time is truly heartbreaking, and feels even worse than the rejection in 2004. As with then, we have to start again from scratch. Let's hope we have an Obama somewhere on the bench again...
I’ve been subject to repeated shocks ever since 1963. I’m not sure how much longer I will last.
Sorry all. This is much worst. Bush, at least respectfed the institution.
Doesn’t mean we give up. It sucks.
@film_girl I want to agree, but I feel like there’s a huge difference wrt 9/11. I hate it but at the same time, it’s hard to imagine any other way to react to 9/11 than to reelect whichever asshole happened to be in charge at the time. It just seems like a perfectly reasonable, if flawed, response to trauma
But wtf was Trump’s 9/11? Covid? Trump voters don’t even believe Covid was real! Trump was rejected in 2020, Republicans failed to capitalize on 2022 inflation, and now they get in power????
@film_girl I’m not mad like I was in 2016. I’m heartbroken and confused.
