I know for a fact that the person behind mastodon stayed up till 3AM working on the tooling. That is a real person losing real sleep over something I'm using and asking others to use.
It can make criticism feel incredibly personal.
Shit disturbing
welp we knew this was gonna happen https://mastodon.social/@sarahjeong/1637930
this is the glass cube i've trapped twitter ceo jack dorsey inside
It's not fancy, but for now, if it becomes the norm, its absence can then serve as a signal that you've moved. Link to where in your bio, and then followers know where to go look for you. Would be neat to just scan down my Follows list and see who I'm missing by the lack of checkmarks.
In the future I hope we can make lists follow users around (This will take a lot of work to architect right within the federation model, but the federation model is worth the work.)
reminded of this: http://paulgraham.com/twitter.html
twitter looked a lot more like masto than it did like twitter in 2009
The brilliant thing about how this has all gone down: Mastodon was going vertical before @Gargron froze it, which was pleasantly just before a series of articles dropped.
At this point Twitter execs are getting nervous -- they directly kicked off the hockeystick last Thursday. It's plain in the graphs.
And w/ joining frozen, they have no idea whether it will continue to hockeystick or plateau.
I look forward to seeing (a couple) of their faces in person. Shh, our secret.
Mashable now. Brace yourselves, folks. http://mashable.com/2017/04/04/mastodon-twitter-social-network/
E2E is only as trustworthy as the endpoints:
Undercover NYPD infiltrated small groups of Black Lives Matter activists and gained access to their text messages, according to newly released documents obtained by the Guardian. ...
...Undercover officers were able to pose as protesters even within small groups, giving them extensive access to details about protesters’ whereabouts and plans.

I see Mastodon in part as simply a reaction to failed governance of Twitter and other tech cos. It may succeed in its own right. It might be prototype for something better/greater. Who knows?
For now I'd much rather spend time here I'd otherwise devote to Twitter and Facebook.
I suppose I can make this semi-formal. :T
Yes, I plan on open sourcing Amaroq. It is not ready to be public-facing at this time (no documentation, local dependencies need cleaning up, I need to finalize a decision on the licensing). But I will be working to do this in the coming weeks. I really do look forward to taking on all the support ya'll are offering, but I gotta get things settled first. I never expected this level of interest this soon. I'll announce when I open things up. Thank you 💕
...it is 9:40 PM CDT. Notifications are 2 hours behind. Home is 3 hours behind and... somehow worse for outside instances (5+). Federated TL 2 hours behind.

So Le Monde, aka France's biggest newspaper, has done a story on Mastodon. This is nuts: http://mobile.lemonde.fr/pixels/article/2017/04/04/le-reseau-social-mastodon-un-twitter-plus-proche-de-l-esprit-originel_5105900_4408996.html

A Pepsi boycott begins because Pepsi deliberately trolled BLM in a pretty genius marketing move and they took the bait
