I agree, but the same is true of @google. @stevewoz how do we get rid of Google when they're so pervasive? (and more) are all monetising user data just like @facebook.

[Talk] [Tech] [Gaming] @mostly_linux on (Episode beta 0.02)

SFW. Some mild language. The podcast is currently in season 0, a beta season as we work through the kinks.

The podcast focuses on videogames, with a focus on Linux and freedom. It bends libertarianish and often mixes views on politics and current events into a weekly rant.

@Firefox offers a multiaccount container add-on. This needs to become a standard part of the browser. Using account containers means that each account (Twitter, FB, Google, etcetera) can't see and track everything else that you're doing and seeing on your browser.

This will never come to Google Chrome because it goes against Google's interests. should push this hard.

Wow. Not sure if I should be happy for New Yorkers or sad for Londoner, but probably both. What the hell is going on in England?

Basically, an coming of age movie. 8/10. I dinged it one point for the lack of a single @rushtheband song in a movie based on a book in which was central to the plot.

Big shout-out to @RealCandaceO for taking the . Keep pushing for .

Truly and deeply disappointed at the absence of @rushtheband from @readyplayerone.

@freedom yeah, been trying to do this myself recently. Got the most important things down, I think. But the amount of data Google must have on us is ridiculous.

I wrote about the process, if you're interested:

kevq.uk/tag/de-googling/

Want to scare yourself? Download the information Google has stored on you at

takeout.google.com/

My data is almost 10GB. That's roughly 7 MILLION WORD DOCUMENTS of data.

Let's talk about

The messaging that you hear comes directly from the big data mining web companies. Their natural competition is the ISP's, who build out the expensive architecture needed for Google and Facebook to operate. is a perverse term, used as doublespeak, to back government regulations that prevented ISP's from competing with them.

arstechnica.com/tech-policy/20

Not using apps or phones isn't a viable solution since they do add value.

In the meantime, while users may , does it really matter if instead all of their information is being harvested and used in the same and perhaps worse ways by Twitter, Google, Microsoft and Apple?

What we need are privacy focused alternatives and those are coming, slowly to be sure, and based on new distributed technologies.Blockchain technologies are probably the answer, in five to eight years time.

@shellkr @freedom I would add the following browser add-ons:

- Decentraleyes, protects you against tracking through "free", centralized, content delivery.
addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firef

- Privacy Settings, alter Firefox's built-in privacy settings easily with a toolbar panel.
addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firef

Optionally:

- uMatrix, point & click to forbid/allow any class of requests made by your browser.
