freedb.org and its services will be shut down on March 31st of 2020.

End of an era, I guess.

@LunaDragofelis

A free database to recognize audio CDs and their contents.

@SunDancer @fribbledom musicbrainz has a freedb compatible service*

*that I could never get to work with freedb programs

@fribbledom well crap.

Better finish up any outstanding rips soon, I guess.

@fribbledom I hope the will be a better alternative soon. Let's call it #MusicBrainz. #freedb 💿 🎶

@fribbledom So, they got purchased, then get shut down. Nice. Watch it come back as a closed source, paid only system!?

@GoatsLive

Uhm, correct me if I'm wrong, but I think they last got purchased in 2006 by Magix?

@fribbledom Not sure when, I'd just seen on their home page that they mentioned the purchase. Odd it would still be there if it was so long ago I guess...

@fribbledom I haven't used it in so long I forgot what it's for. I wasn't a fan of the data quality so I copied and pasted stuff from discogs.com instead.

@fribbledom
I wonder how this is going to work (or not) for the #openbsd cdio tool?

@bill @fribbledom There appears to be a consensus to wait and see if a replacement service appears. At the very least, the default should change from freedb before 6.7.
