The thing about using applications that are served on the web platform is that it's very possible that you are never using the same version of the application twice. It's like that expression about rivers but so much less cool.

Might be worth noting in #feditips but if you set up to cross-post from Twitter to Fedi/Mastodon, disable retweets and quote replies for proper fediquette

If your posts on fedi look like "RT @/suchandsuch" people will find this spammy and likely mute you because we're trying to get away from that site and don't want to see automated interactions from there, if that makes sense.

Not trying to be mean just being helpful because a lot of folks do it and it does get spammy

i don't really understand why #nix uses nixlang

it's by far the worst, and worst documented, part of the entire system

and, in addition to this, so much of the ecosystem requires _reading_ nixlang; in order to understand how many of the nixos options work, you have to read their source code

that would be much less awful if it were an easy-to-use language, or if it could be reliably learned in a few hours by everyone in the demographic they want to use the system

unfortuantely, that's not possible, not because the language is very complex - it's not - but because there is no good introductory text. nix-pills conflates nixlang and the nix package manager far too much

the nix user experience is a step function; getting started is hard, but then you get some benefits, until you run into a fucking brick wall of learning all of nixlang and a zillion weird generators

sometimes, i think that there has to be a better font picker design than "every installed font in alphabetical order"

Was just reminded of when a friend of mine was helping design an animal calling device and he put it in a tree and blasted the crow call at max volume. Crows started flocking in from all around and then circled at a respectful distance, agitated by the idea that there could be a crow that was SO LOUD

i've been in love with the yellow-on-green pcb look ever since noticing it in old japanese audio gear, finally found a couple fabs who'll (supposedly) do it not so cheap

looking forward to getting these...

re: Complaining about web platforms

@fruchti I built a little tool that use scrapping to make webcomic RSS feeds viewable directly inside your reader, and it already supports a few webtoon comics: https://gitlab.federez.net/lhark/utinni

(little warning: right now rendering seems broken on arch's liferea (I think the debian package already backported a fix))

Complaining about web platforms

Trying to read a webcomic episode in my RSS reader. It’s Webtoon, so only the first two panels are there. Open in browser, need to confirm age first. WebToon navigates to the start page, close, open from RSS reader again. Cookie settings, start page again. Close, open again, ‘Wouldn’t you rather use our app?’. No, so it’s the start page again, naturally.

I really need to clear everything Webtoon from my webcomics folder. Something like this isn’t worth the effort.

not serious, what

stuttgart is an evil place that is inhabited by evil people. everything in stuttgart is constantly trying to prevent you from leaving. if you see loud white german teens on your train they are going to turn your train around and take it to stuttgart. if you are in the EU you are not safe from stuttgart. any train that leaves from stuttgart gets cancelled or delayed. stuttgart is pulling you in

Did you know: If you give an LED enough power, it will continue to glow after the power is removed? This is the result of a phenomena called "Catching on fire" and it can only be done once.

This old traffic light controller had it's door open recently; all those serious octal relays.
(Heck I hope this isn't live, I think the active controller for these lights is in the rack/box on the other side of the road and this looks more than a little knackered).

Concept: Black metal band logo, but it’s made out of block-drawing characters
