the catastrophising way some self-criticism is phrased really stinks of "we have to be perfect because we're the critics of everything that exists" which, no. we'll never be perfect. the process of identifying the things we're doing wrong and navigating disagreements among our own ranks is what we should be doing all the time. for as long as you can identify things that are going wrong, you're on the right path.
oh and, in case that's not clear, I am NOT saying abusers have a place among us. they never have and never will. cheers.
@garfiald federation is about four alignments - and three are positive or affirming;
following/talking as close friends
sharing an instance/associates
across instances/strangers and people you see in the day to day regardless
and so we treat all of these like neighbors except one;
defederated instances / the trash fire that's burning near all of our houses, and we quarantine there
abusers ousted from within, sincere appreciation for others without
@garfiald i think what fedi has been about for me is learning to live with people who are different from me in new and more directly emotionally connected ways than were ever available to me before
to think that corner prophets really existed all along - our corners were just sunbeam and snouts at the time
@garfiald i've been meditating on this too as a way of healing the people who aren't allowed to federate -
when people only build trash fires, nobody feels like they're living at home, even if they're not homeless per se. we need to feel like others want to join us at our spaces
and if nazis simply can't pull the groundswell that a unified left can (and has always been able to), and we consistently defederate from bad actors, they will finally get the no-platforming they need to wake up to that their toxic shit is isolating from and to life.
