sex terminology

HAHAHAHA I love this book that, instead of AMAB and AFAB, uses the terms "spermite" and "eggite"

@georgespolitzer Castration: An Abbreviated History of Western Manhood by Gary Taylor. has some good bits!

@garfiald
You just reminded me of this scene from Mass Effect 3, where Matriarch Aethita confesses to Shepard that she's Liara's father.
"You mean her other mother?"
"No. I didn't pop her out."
"Sorry. If you were human you'd both be called her mother, regardless of which one of you gave birth."
"Well I'm not human, am I? Anthropocentric bag of dicks."

This scene stuck with me and made me realize how much terminology is actually based on tradition rather than science.

sex terminology

@garfiald wow hate it! guess folks who dont make eggs or sperm just dont exist 🤪

sex terminology

@bee clearly written by someone who knows a lot about biology :thinkhappy:

sex terminology

@garfiald well they thought up these really cool new scientific terms so they must be a genius

re: sex terminology

@garfiald @bee wait you mean this is bad and not good? (seriously i actually thought this was a good choice from the books' authors but i guess that's just ignorant cis me being ignorant and cis ._. (this is also serious and non-sarcastic))

re: sex terminology

@sobsz No, it is not good. For one thing, loads of cis people with typical sexual characteristics do not produce sperm or ovaries (for instance... people who... have had their menopause...). In addition, intersex people make up 1% of the population (thats the same proportion as redheads!).

re: sex terminology

@sobsz The choice of terminology can be more thoroughly critiqued within the specific context of the book, but the important thing is that human reproductive organs come in more than two shapes

re: sex terminology

@garfiald mmmokay yeah i see your point i think?
still it was some attempt at not perpetuating the "man = pp, woman = womb" stereotype (even if they absolutely missed the point 2 sentences later)
probably not necessary to invent a whole new word though (i mean yeah amab and afab only differ by one letter but ehhhhhhh (also from cursory googling i think genitalia can be misidentified based on their size, allowing for an amab person with a womb and vice versa, but i'm probably very wrong and incorrect delete toot))

re: sex terminology

@garfiald actually wait @"some attempt": probably not because if they actually cared i doubt they'd screw up that badly 2 sentences later

re: sex terminology

@garfiald (this is the last reply i swear)
i guess what i'm saying is
the authors might've only done it reluctantly like "yeah sure we'll play along with your gender game" (there's the possibility that they actually wanted to do a good but i don't have the article so i'm gonna assume no)
but the idea itself does kinda have some merit (not all women are "eggites™", and maybe some afab people had ambiguous genitals so the doctor thought it was not pp but it was pp (unless that's not what afab means) so it'd make sense to group the latter with other pp-havers) but only barely (still need terms for people who are too young/old to reproduce and also those who can do neither)
and of course 2 sentences later all the merit is gone as they completely neglect the existence of grs and trans people in general

sex terminology

@garfiald "the two categories are differentiated by [a few dozen body features that may or may not interact with each other, don't all have to be the same gender, and can mostly be changed with medical intervention... including sperm or egg production huh wow fuck i fucked this up lol] ... "

sex terminology

@garfiald love too recognise people based on what type of gametes they produce

sex terminology

@garfiald tried using a public wc the other day, but instead of a picture of a sperm cell and an egg cell, the doors had a picture of a human wearing trousers and another wearing a skirt. so i just pissed and shitted myself

sex terminology

@garfiald sorry i'm too busy snorting pheromons 🙏

sex terminology

@garfiald I love that these sound like disease names in french

sex terminology

@garfiald I hate it when I see Eggites in the bookstore
