reminder: most browsers support *lossless* VP9, which is great for animated pixel art - Mastodon converts incoming GIFs to lossy H.264

you can do this with ffmpeg (preserves alpha)

ffmpeg -i crispy.gif -vcodec libvpx-vp9 -lossless 1 crispy.webm

My grandparents decided to learn Welsh when they were 65. After two years of lessons in it (and talking Welsh with me at home, I was going to a Welsh school and was already fluent), they were fluent. My grandmother, around the same time, decided to overcome her phobia of water and had me teach her how to swim. She'd swim laps with me in the pool up into her 80s.

You're not too old and it's not too late to try something new.

Wait Caravan Palace got hacked? I thought it was just them trying some new aesthetic, now I feel like an idiot. :|

I think if you want to learn programming Ruby is a pretty good language to start with. It does not have the steep verbosity of Java, the wat factor of JavaScript, or the explosiveness of C. Ruby is simple and elegant, and learning it immediatelly opens you up to job opportunities for Rails projects (or open source contributions to things like GitLab, Discourse, or indeed Mastodon)

Here are two recurring problems for our current era of solving everything machine learning:

1. None of these services have any notion of 'quality'
2. None of them understand emotional context

Youtube keeps reccing me movie critique videos because they look and sound identical to the ones I watch. But they are rubbish made by morons. Same with search.

Other systems' color palettes are not nearly so interesting; IBM's EGA and the ZX Spectrum palette are just "full blast" 0xF00 red, blue, green etc. The VIC-II engineers specifically say they picked colors they liked. mastodon.social/media/1eXt_xOC

today What's Good is how the two engineers who designed the Commodore 64's VIC-II video chip chose 16 very specific colors that profoundly affected the aesthetics of the thousands of games produced for the C64 in the decades since. I sometimes wonder what their office looked like, what kind of music they were listening to. Every color choice is a moment in time, only a few echo for decades. mastodon.social/media/mJ_06eDZ

these music production guides from twitter.com/Tarekith are absolutely fantastic - covering areas such as mixing, mastering, dynamics processing, space and depth, musical inspiration. Definitely give them a read!!

it's nice to know that a perfectly acceptable approach for self-mastering your tracks is:

- Fix it in the mix instead
- Listen on as many different systems as possible
- Stick a limiter on the master channel and call it a day

(this guide goes into more depth)

"choice" is a pretty unhelpful term when programming something where you pick from a list of options, because it's ambiguous as to whether you mean "all the options" or just "the option that was chosen"
