GeekMomProjects

I've become obsessed with this cleverly designed articulated mannekin build (printables.com/model/622290-du) and am printing a cohort to use as place card holders for Thanksgiving.

My new friends are distracting

@geekmomprojects I built a Lucky 13 but I've yet to make a Dummy 13 - going to give it a try after I saw your make pop up in my Printables feed 👍🏻

@andypiper they're quite addictive! Haven't tried Lucky13, but am getting quite familiar with assembling Dummy13 at this point. It really is an amazing design. I'm a big fan of party favors that make a good activity. I think we'll have fun playing with them at the table.

@geekmomprojects

These are adorable! (but I'm biased 🤖 )

@geekmomprojects they're so good! They only thing preventing me from printing more is that I only have one colour of PETG for the skeleton.

@astrovore Don't let it stop you. You can use PLA for the armor in different colors. I'm getting better prints for the armor in PLA than PETG.

@geekmomprojects Very sorry to bug you - I love ALL your projects!!! (Been great seeing your stuffed animatronic progression!!)

I’m wondering if you might be able to tell me what you are printing with PLA on? I’ve just ordered an X1 carbon as my first printer and I’m hoping to match your amazing prints of these!!

What filaments/colors did you use?

@Verxion thank you! I LOVE my Bambab X1 Carbon, and it seems to handle a wide variety of filaments pretty well. If you are using the AMS, you'll have to print adapters to make cardboard spools of filament roll smoothly. I don't have a particular favorite brand, though I've been extremely surprised at how well Duramic PLA turns out on regular PLA print settings.

@Verxion It has a super smooth finish and has been remarkably durable. I mostly buy Sunlu PETG and PLA on Amazon, but find pretty similar results from the other popular manufacturers.

@geekmomprojects I get my X1C -*TODAY*-!!!!!!!

(I’m not excited at ALLLLLLLL, lol)

I’m hearing about issues with printing PLA at higher temps; I was going to put my X1C in my garage but it gets up to 140 degrees in summertime. What is your experience with printing PLA at higher temps, or do you? I am concerned about fumes if I print in my home - how do you vent fumes or do you?

@Verxion I don't worry about venting with PLA or PETG - have never had any problems with them, and I think they're pretty safe. The enclosure makes it relatively safe for things like ABS as well, but I never print with them. Enjoy your new toy!

@geekmomprojects Do you know what adapters you used? I did order the AMS.

@Verxion it was this model (printables.com/model/251028-ca) and I had to use the thinner variation to make it work well in my AMS system, though there are many other models of spool adapters our there now, and the best option may depend on which brand of filament you use.

@jasoncoon @geekmomprojects Hah, I'm working on this too - in fact, I'd be happily printing them out by now, except electing to use PETG for the frame parts is what taught me that A. PETG is highly hygroscopic, and B. that's a problem when you live in a pretty damp building... picking up a filament dryer (i.e. food dehydrator) tomorrow & that'll hopefully put me back on track 😁

Imma do runners tho; I'd rather remove some flash etc. than fiddle with adhesion of such tiny parts 😁

@jwcph @geekmomprojects yeah, the print failed. Just use the version with the runners. 😆

@jasoncoon @jwcph didn't even try without runners. I see that as just tempting date.

@geekmomprojects just out of curiosity, how long is the frame taking to print on your Bambu?
I'm printing it at 0.15mm layer height with a 0.6mm nozzle, and it's estimating 1h30m on my Prusa MK3.9.

@jasoncoon I've printed the frame at both 0.08 and 0.12mm layer height and 0.4mm nozzle, and it was about 2.5 and 2 hours for the different resolutions I think, though I don't remember fully. Can double check when I am home.

@jasoncoon @geekmomprojects THAT’S what they reminded me of! Thank you!

@geekmomprojects Ah, I have purple ABS just for the things like this but I don't have heated chamber any mode. I guess I'll just use a boring color and print it in PETG.

@geekmomprojects Reminds me of the Cray robot from Robocraft. I wonder if there's away to export the bots you build to 3d modeling software....

@TeflonTrout you can purchase the design models from the original creator on Printables.

@geekmomprojects You are wonderful for pointing that out! I was talking about a kind of niche computer game (as usual) called Robocraft.

It's like Legos, but you build machines that drive,fly, shoot, and can be destroyed piece by piece. The robot pilots have a really similar style!

store.steampowered.com/app/301

The things people build would make awesome models, I'm going to see if there's a way to turn them into .stls.

store.steampowered.comRobocraft on SteamBuild insane, fully customisable robot battle vehicles that drive, hover, walk and fly in the free-to-play action game Robocraft. Add weapons from the future and jump in the driving seat as you take your creation into battle against other players online!

@geekmomprojects stick small neodymium magnets to their feet and use metal bench.

@geekmomprojects ok, but I think painting figures is a waste of flesh. Make the figure I'll appreciate you.

@scentedmeat @noondlyt they're very well designed 3D printed poseable mini manikins that I downloaded from Printables. See the original post on the thread for a link to the model.

@geekmomprojects SecUnit is pondering the origins of this strange and mesmerizing alien artifact.

@jasoncoon I love it!!! LEDs do make everything, even things that are already awesome, better!

@ferrix @jasoncoon if forced, I'd say, maybe, funeral procession, but I'd really like my funeral to be lit like a Christmas tree, so maybe that's not a good counterexample either.

@ferrix @jasoncoon yes, I think that there is a large untapped market for undermount casket LEDs!

@geekmomprojects those are 100% and 150% scale. I'm printing one at 200% now. 😁
Any bigger and I'll have to split up the sets. 😬

@jasoncoon @geekmomprojects Does the assembly get easier or harder as you scale up? And do the joints still work as well?

@geekmomprojects @jasoncoon

what? What? WHAT?

**NO LEDS** ??

(When did I cross into an alternate universe where GeekMomProjects created something for herself **WITHOUT* LEDs? 8- )

@jasoncoon there is a strong family resemblance!

@jasoncoon @geekmomprojects

It's Bob C, with Tiny Tom on his shoulder!
