twitter has found them not in violation so i need the back up.
@gingerroot Do you believe that in such situations, people are better off in a distributed environment like Mastodon, where there is no central moderation?
@masyukun i believe in all situations sites like mastodon are (generally) better, tbh. but there have been cases of harassment here as well and the admins did nothing so it’s still not good.
@masyukun and i believe that’s largely because many admins are cis white men who have no actually experience or understanding of harassment.
@gingerroot So in a Twitter situation, where it's centrally controlled, an understanding admin could, what, end the person's account? In Mastodon, there is no similarly centralized control, so what distributed mechanisms might be effective in handling harassment? Is blocking the offender sufficient?
@masyukun part of ending harassment and making places safe comes at a social/cultural level of wherever it can happen. if places start out with no tolerance for it, it’s less likely to happen there. twitter obviously does tolerate it, hence why it flourishes there.
admins on mastodon can talk to one another and ban harassment / harassers from the instance they’re on even if they’re targeting someone on another instance. it’s been done. the culture is a bit better here.
@masyukun no, blocking is not sufficient anywhere since you can simply log out or create another account to harass someone from / view their profile and take screen shots. or use incognito mode.
