@gladimdim definitely not my first, but I haven't been as excited about a project as I am about Mastodon for a long time
INTRO TO FEDERATION:
1. "mastodon" is a piece of software that runs on a server. There's a lot of servers that run it & u can follow ppl on other servers.
2. When u follow someone from another server, your server receives their toots.
3. The federated TL is all public toots that the server receives, ie all of the toots from everyone that ppl on your server follow.
4. ERGO: if u want to see more toots in the fed TL, follow + get other ppl on your server to follow ppl from other servers!
The @Support account is official, a couple dedicated people helping users with questions (I do not personally post from it though)
Good morning! Background processing queues on this instance cleared up a little, but still haven't caught up with real-time. Going to continue working on increasing the performance of background tasks to increase the number of toots per minute that can be processed without delay.
Sorry for the silliness. The activity is simply more than 4x of previous peaks.
In other news, yesterday I finally fixed the mastodon bridge tool.
I am not reading comments on Hacker News because I pretty much remember all the various sentiments from my first "Show HN", and I do not have the energy to also answer questions there
But as others have pointed out, these are all nice problems to have. I am so happy that people are finally using my work at large. <3
It's kinda weird to think about a social network where businesses own their own presences, rather than relying on a capricious third party service like Twitter or Facebook. Imagine NBC or The Verge running a Mastodon instance for their reporters to toot from, or Bethesda operating an instance for PR and customer support. No more lost business when Facebook changes their algorithms again because they need more money from boosted posts.
Mastodon the band has noticed my project, aaaaaaaaaaa https://twitter.com/mastodonmusic/status/849388922320949249
The original server operated by the Mastodon gGmbH non-profit
