To add translation to almost any iOS app, including #Amaroq:

- Install the Workflow app on your phone: itunes.apple.com/us/app/workfl
- Open it. Go to Gallery. Search for "translate article". Install the "...to English" version
- View an Amaroq status. Tap ..., then Share, then "...More" on the bottom. Enable "Run Workflow"
- Tap Run Worflow, then Translate Article. Give it permission. Read the translated article in a popup window

﷽ is a pretty cool codepoint.
not only does it look pretty and is an entire arabic phrase ("in the name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate"), it's also the widest Unicode character (averaged across major renderers)

Lifehacker has an article about setting up your own VPN on AWS's free tier, and I don't know how to feel about that. On one hand, yeah, it's better than using some rando "Free VPN!!!!" that injects malware or whatever, but on the other hand, people who don't know what they're doing really, really should not be signing up for an AWS account. It's way too easy for it to get compromised and rack up $texas in bills.

Datomic is a really neat database if you're not familiar with it. Relational, ACID, semi-distributed (1 writer plus read replicas), has time travel and uses Datalog as the query language instead of SQL. Costs money, but there's a free version which I am currently in the process of writing a blog post about

Woo, my blog now loads in 45ms (excluding DNS) and is a hair over 9kb total on initial load. Now I should actually write some content to replace the Lorem ipsum instead of fucking with CSS...

Setting up a static site generator to use for my blog instead of Ghost and having great pleasure ripping all the JavaScript out of an existing template. My goal is to get total page load under 10kb

LB: Oh my god, I want that so much. Patrick Stewart on the federation. Eep

Maybe Container Engine is more like EBS, I'll have to look into that instead

Show thread

By comparison, I really don't like how Google App Engine looks. EBS just manages VMs for you, GAE kinda seems more like Lambda where you have to deal with a bunch of weird limitations

Working on a side project that I was previously deploying to a plain VM and just moved it to Elastic Beanstalk. Holy shit this is so good

Here's a thing that makes Mastodon instances work less well than they could...
when you visit an instance, all the front pages look the same.
"About this instance" is a TINY little link under the sign-up form. This is crazy.
Instances should LEAD with a community description, not bury it.
That's like a newsgroup leading with the OS it used to run the newsgroup rather than saying: "This is a Kenny G community"

Me shyly holding out a piece of paper and a pen to Judge Alsup

"Could... you make it out to Sarah"

My voice cracks a little as I ask

"And could... could you also reverse a string in Java right beneath that"

Gordon ✅ boosted

well, no, I do know people who know astonishing amounts of stuff about Ruby and its implementation
their descriptions tend to sound more like H.P. Lovecraft than anything else, for even basic things like the parser

I am originating a new usage of the ✅. I hope it catches on, because in a sense it's mostly used this way now.

As portability is currently quite limited, the checkmark now indicates that I am actively using that instance, and that my other nonchecked instance identities are hibernating.
