Throwback to when @gruber was making fun of the EU for getting Apple Intelligence later than everyone else.
@thomholwerda Do you expect every new thing Apple has to delay or never launch in the EU to be of Apple Intelligence quality?
Still no word on iPhone Mirroring, for example, which I use every day and is technically excellent. And based on yesterday's EU decision I expect never to come to the EU.
@gruber @thomholwerda there are features *every year* that Apple doesn't launch in the EU. It's been 20 years and I don't have TV Shows in iTunes. They just fooled the eager tech press into believing *this* round of half-finished, delayed features was somehow the EU's fault, and not because multiple divisions at Apple are in now crisis mode because of a decade of bad decisions
@stroughtonsmith @thomholwerda You’re arguing iPhone Mirroring is not in the EU for similar reasons to TV Shows in iTunes?
@gruber @stroughtonsmith @thomholwerda and why is Apple not launching mirroring in EU to begin with? What reason could they possibly have? Please enlighten us.
@gryzor @stroughtonsmith @thomholwerda The EC is all-in on an interpretation of the DMA that holds that iOS isn’t permitted to have features that only work with other Apple products. iPhone Mirroring only works with Macs (Apple Silicon or those with a T2 security chip).
@gruber @gryzor @stroughtonsmith @thomholwerda
> The EC is all-in on an interpretation of the DMA that holds that iOS isn’t permitted to have features that only work with other Apple products
Nope, it's not. And it's disingenuous at best to pretend that it is.
The EC has been very explicit as to which features Apple cannot withhold from other developers, and they all have been common sense features anyone would expect.
@gruber @gryzor @stroughtonsmith @thomholwerda
I also find it insane that the tech world has gone from "let's build everything" to "whatever our corporate overlords let us build is the only thing we will build, unquestioningly".
And then write things like "creating platforms so that other developers can innovate has been the corporate overlord's greatest strength".
@dmitriid @gruber @gryzor @stroughtonsmith @thomholwerda to extend off this…
Gruber, if what you saying is correct then iOS should be heavily stripped back ages ago in order to comply. There are a ton of features which exist in the EU that only work across Apple’s own devices such as the example you gave.
I mentioned this in our own exchange a while ago to which I got zero response: https://mastodon.world/@InterfaceEngineer/112662462394831762
