Hello Assembled People of European Mastodon! I work at @eff on international copyright. You might have heard of , the EU proposal to require © filters on sharing sites.

We're really worried that this could affect services like ActivePub/Mastodon instances, opening them up to lawsuits or requiring expensive filters.

The key vote is on Wednesday -- please call or write your MEP and ask them to vote against to protect the future of the internet! saveyourinternet.eu/

I'm not happy with how the Wil Wheaton situation was resolved. An admin was overwhelmed with frivolous reports about him and felt forced to exile him. I've said before that I think it sets a dangerous precedent on how a large group of people can mobilize to drive anyone off the fediverse. Mob rule is universally dangerous: Mods and admins must examine evidence and decide based on wrongdoing and danger, and not on how many times someone was reported.

Is it just me, or is there extra hostility towards GPL these days?

The hardest part of using PGP, key management, doesn't scale well in large organizations. We solved this problem at First Look Media (where there are over 200 PGP users) with GPG Sync. We maintain a keylist, and everyone subscribes to it, so everyone has the latest public key for everyone else.

I'm excited to announce that we've submitted a draft RFC that will turn GPG Sync into an internet standard!

Don't let your Open Source get ##commonsclaused! Read about how the #CommonsClause restricts your software freedom. Despite the opposition's rhetoric, #FOSS *is* sustainable without turning it into proprietary software; it's what we do here at #Conservancy. sfconservancy.org/blog/2018/au

This is actually horrific. The “correct” answer was Google Drive.

It'd be great if you could switch instances but take all your toots, follows and followers with you. I'd more inclined to move to another instance to lessen the server load on this main one if I didn't have to start over.

Until now I forwarded re-tweets from Twitter to Mastodon. I disabled it now, because I think this re-tweets always looks quite disturbing on Mastodon. I post my own stuff on Mastodon anyway and if I see something on birdsite which is really worth sharing here, I will do the extra work and create a nice looking toot manually.
