Greg Wilson

20 years ago this week I received a grant from the Python Software Foundation to rewrite my notes on software engineering for scientists and publish them under an open license. Those notes later became Software Carpentry.

(I really did believe that twenty years on this would all be a standard part of the undergrad curriculum in STEM but the median student graduating today knows no more about this stuff than they did in 2004. I really don't understand why, but I have reluctantly accepted that I'll be doing remedial catch-up for what's left of my career.)

@gvwilson ha, joke's on you: they simply out-waited your notes, and now they can just get the AI to write the code for them! 😜

on a more serious note: most STEM people aren't particularly good @ statistics, either; which has been of obvious vital importance since at least the 19th Century 😛

@gvwilson Software Carpentry helped me level up in my career. Thank you so much for that work.

One reason I joined my company years ago was because they hired via apprenticeships. They put in the work to teach people Software Engineering 101.

What I learned over my long career is that companies all want someone else to do this kind of training and investment in people.

They only want to harvest the fruit, not care for the tree. Oh, also while whining that nobody else does the investment.

@jefframnani I'm glad it was useful - I left the org in 2017, but and very grateful to everyone who has kept it going and growing since. And yeah, everybody wants skilled grad students or proficient developers but nobody wants to train them - I've tried several times to find or create a Carpentry-style role for myself inside a company, but never managed to 😞 Glad your employer is more enlightened than most…
