I saw somebody say they're too left to be a Lib Dem and I'm like "...that's not possible?"

But I forget that people think we're all centrists.

Bloody hell even I'm tucked way in the bottom left corner of the Political Compass and I'm not even who I think of when I think of a lefty Lib Dem. :)

@hollyamory M. Junaid Alam (R.I.P.) taught me that part of the problem with these labels is that we're often allowing others to define what policies and belief form "centrist" or "moderate" thinking. Once those are in flux, everything is in flux.

@amylsacks
Oh indeed. I'm very sure the Lib Dems are not a centrist party, and I surround myself with people who know that, but there are plenty of managerial centrists in it who think we must align ourselves exactly in the center of The Big Two (an especially crazy prospect when they're exactly the same; we have no opposition because Labour keep voting with the Tories).

Many people don't get that liberalism is orthogonal to left and right. Doesn't help the word's used differently in the U.S.

@hollyamory I like to grouse that over here, the 2-party system is just pro sports, but even that's avoiding the real truth. Our "progressives," "liberals," whatever... endlessly peddle the idea that their pet pols aren't obliged to engage in any fight that's not a predestined win. Even the highest-paid pro athlete isn't permitted to do that without getting roasted alive in the press and by fans. :/

@hollyamory Leftists who think the state needs more control in order to have better redistribution may think they're too left for LDs?
