Does anyone know the etymology of /etc/issue on Unix machines?

@ieure I hadn't heard of that file until today. The man page for it on my system is dated 1993-07-24. I guess it hasn't changed much. I'd be curious to hear what you find out.

@ieure I don't know, but my guess is: UNIX newsletters! Because everyone reads it. ^_^

@ieure
I figured it meant to issue a notice to users?

@ieure
It's not easy to search effectively for "issue" today, is it?

@xurizaemon Nope. I poked around a bit in github.com/dspinellis/unix-his but didn't see a version of getty that supported /etc/issue at all.

@ieure
Anyway, on etymology/origin of filename; "issue" I think means to emit or put something out, which is fitting to the file in my understanding.
