I think that I am between two very different groups on mastodon. Some of the people I see talk about how wonderful mastodon is as a safe space and a bunch talk about how horrifically toxic it is becoming. I think that mastodon isn't actually all the way there in terms of being able to build communities because there is so much emphasis on lowering barriers to communication without any actual community building things. Building a community does require being able to define borders.
@Elizafox @inmysocks From my unhealthy observations with drama, it seems much of the toxicity is between admins with pile-on effects between the users who stand behind their admin and the users who fear they will get cut off from their friends over a dispute between admins (almost always two different safe spaces with slightly different rules going at one another)

@inmysocks @Elizafox β¦the people who view this as their safe space are generally less active users who are smart enough not to follow admins just because they're the server admins.

@inmysocks Agreed. I see this in all the spaces where I have the ability to curate (here, G+, IRC, etc.): there are several borders because we all have several identities.
