So can anyone say if there has been an uptick in activity on #friendica or #diaspora since the delete Facebook drive a while ago?

I'm guessing it's because Friendica federates with Mastodon, while Diaspora doesn't.
Mastodon is by far the most active alternative social network, so that benefits Friendica.
@switchingsocial that's a promising sign. One of the biggest problems with getting people to switch networks is the level of activity and presence of friends.
The idea any federated platform can draw on the collective activity of the whole fediverse will make trying/switching networks much easier for people.
