James Thomson

I can build Dice by PCalc as a native Reality OS app, but there isn't a way to draw the dice with depth unless I replace all the SceneKit rendering with RealityKit, as expected.

But, at least there is a route forwards, and I can relatively easily make it feel more native by moving the controls into ornaments outside the window, etc.

@jamesthomson can’t wait for you to be able to make it so real I’m chasing dice under the couch or refrigerator again.

@jamesthomson I still can’t wait for the football ⚽️ sized dice 🎲 to bounce around the room. I bet that would be fun with people ducking* and all sorts!

*On this rare occasion, I did indeed mean ducking.

@jamesthomson Rolling virtual dice on any available surface would be a killer feature.

@_ChrisHarris That should be doable, I have that sort of working on iOS currently.

@jamesthomson With 3D dice on a tray horizontally in front of you, you could ping them off on to a surface. It's about the only situation I could think of where you might want to go against the HIG and have a ‘Tenser's floating disc’ following you round. Lol.

@jamesthomson Of course I assume sanity will prevail ;)

@jamesthomson What about just being able to toss some dice on a surface already in my house, like a table or the floor?

@JPZ That’s already working in the iOS app, should be possible!

@jamesthomson Look into whether volumes are better for you than windows, as well — or as an option for the user.

@millenomi Oh a volume is totally the way to go, but right now I have a UIKit app using SceneKit primarily, so I have work to do :)

@jamesthomson Seems your situation will be a common task in the next few months. Any chance there'll be some kind of help from Xcode?

@acf Not really, there’s definitely a sense of “if you’re not using up-to-date SwiftUI, good luck” but there’s more there than I’d expect.

@jamesthomson Also, make the dice fall out of the window and onto the floor.

@dmoren @siracusa No virtual dessert, until your tidied up all the virtual dice from your virtual room.

@jamesthomson @dmoren @siracusa And also eat all of your virtual vegetables :)

@dmoren @jamesthomson @siracusa what happens if you step on a virtual d4? 🤔

@glennf Hot and cold running dice, coming up.

@glennf @jamesthomson you know that skit about the restaurant where literally everything is cake?

I expect Dice by Pcalc to emit dice from EVERYWHERE when run in VisionOS. At first it’s mundane like the dice coming out of the window, but before the user knows it, they are swimming in a pool of dice as they come out of faucets, the TV, shoes, absolutely everywhere.

@jamesthomson @glennf Oh, no, he is going to make it one of those UK separate dice faucets that you have to mix in the sink, isn’t he!

@glennf @jamesthomson I’ll need a Diceon to clean up all the ones I drop on the floor

@jamesthomson @glennf As long as a hot die bouncing into a cold die combines to form an ice cube. It’s physics, look it up.

@Psimonkey10 @siracusa Sadly, the headset cannot inflict pain.

@Psimonkey10 @jamesthomson @siracusa Who’s going to be first to release a Lego on the floor simulator for visionOS and RealitySocks…

@jamesthomson
Could you put a little table for the dice to roll on inside the "dice panel"?

@khoji That will likely be how it works.

@jamesthomson Just curious: do you have any way of influencing what is shown on the outside display of the headset? Like, could you show the dice result on the outside so other people around the table can see what was thrown?

@markv No control or access to that whatsoever, that I've seen.

@jamesthomson I think I and most “want” a virtual dice tray that can appear to sit on a table or float or whatever… but not sure if that’s actually the best UI for the hardware.

I guess ideally I’d want to be able to expand to have labeled “handfuls” of dice for various tasks and needs and the dice tray can be viewed at various angles and such as needed.

@jamesthomson We're counting on you. Power to The Dice!
