Question @Mastodon : how do instances find each other? Is there some kind of global address book?

@Mastodon is the language filter working? I've ticked the languages I can read but keep seeing those I don't on the federated timeline. Am I misunderstanding the language filter in settings?

@Mastodon it's very unclear to me: (a) where is the column where I see the feed of users I follow and (b) how to create a feed column from a search.

I wonder—assuming federated social networks take flight—what would most likely be the binding factor of communities to gather around a same instance. Will it be content? Or will it be identity (politics)? Or perhaps features forked platforms will offer that others don’t? #mastodon #futures

Is there a way to subscribe to a search and have a feed dedicated to it?
