i think a big divide in the way that people are expected to behave (which we see a lot on the internet) may basically come down to how you define "respect"
a lot of people think "i respect this person" means "i try to treat this person how i would want to be treated"
whereas a lot of other people think "i respect this person" means "i try to treat this person how they want to be treated"
i personally prefer the latter. but you see lots of people who don't!

@pan (i think some people operate on this trust-based principle, but a lot of people have lower levels of trust and when someone says something that they don't understand or relate to, they assume the person is not genuinely expressing their perspective, and jump to the conclusion that the other person has some kind of malicious intent or is not acting in good faith, and use this as a justification for dismissing the thing they find it hard to relate to)
