biggest problem with computers is they're still designed for people who like computers
@jk which is who exactly
@jk I did enjoy that brief period where iOS wasn't. It couldn't last tho.
@RobF it's like. great, now a computer can annoy me when i'm standing at a bus stop
@jk I feel like at this point they're not even designed for people who like computers, they just antagonize everybody
@jk this is a terrifyingly accurate summation of the problem
@garbados @jk eh, i don't think dumbing interfaces down even more is gonna help anyone
we need simpler systems that are easy and fun to hack on
but those aren't as profitable because the manufacturer's control is inversely proportional to the user's control, so we have crap that just exists so people can sell you more software that you can't really combine with other software
@grainloom @garbados @jk
Right. We have two kinds of computers: the kind designed for people who love the worst parts of computers, and the kind designed for people who the designers assume cannot be trusted with the best parts of computers. This is because we don't distinguish between the best & worst parts.
@grainloom i wasn't thinking about dumbing anything down. i was probably projecting my own interpretations over @jk 's shitpost, but i was thinking about it more from a class perspective. the tech industry makes expensive widgets for people who like expensive widgets, creating a cycle of degradation in which shiny new machines are rife with ancient problems.
@jk computers designed for people who hate computers are called smartphones
@uint8_t used to be the case, but now smartphones dont even fit in your pocket, they have multiple windows and photoshop on them and shit
The *real* problem is that some people still don't like our digital friends. Which sets their sadness bit to 1.
Why don't you like our digital frens, Josef? They all like you. All of them.
