Additionally, I have chosen to use the Mute symbol to represent inactive instances. (see @five ) Feedback? Does this feel intuitive?
Every year during the month of March a phyle of ragged cyborgs would set camp near the brutalist urban sprawl. With a great uproar of engines and synthetized voices they would display new gadgets and bionic augmentations. First they brought the 'locator'. A heavily modded, old brazillian cyborg with a carbon-nanotube beard and plasteel hands, who introduced himself as Melquíades, put on a public demonstration of what he himself called an old relic from Minas Gerais' military-industrial complex.
Cryptic visages echo through the pulsating landscape. She adjusts her goggles and begins scanning the air, hunting for chronoshifting game. The hunt has begun. The seasoned planeswalker jumps using the forests' subtle reality cracks as pivots to outmaneuver potential prey. A wavelike deer flows into view, notices her and dissapears into the distance, leaving a trail of buzzing patterns along the turns it takes.
The ✅ symbol @ firstname.lastname@example.org, signals that I'm actively using that instance, and that my other nonchecked instance identities are hibernating. Hat-tip to @five for the idea.
Remember when #Twitter had #RSS / #Atom feeds for all users? Wasn't that great? Well, #Mastodon and any other #Fediverse server has that too. And it's here to stay, since the protocol is based on this.
Here's mine, for example: https://mastodon.social/users/rysiek.atom
Now you can use your favorite RSS reader to read my toots. I know, right?
Risks and challenges: not negativity, but asking what happens next.
Federation: I understand why people burned by centralized networks love it. In practice it is not a concept non-nerds either understand or want. It's an implementation detail.
Non-universal names are a bug not a feature to most people.
Centralization has usability benefits.
So expect convergence on this shard & confusion when it falls over.
The sky above the port was the color of the hammer blast of the tropical sun. Colonel Aureliano Buendía was to remember that distant afternoon when his father took him to discover Intrusion Countermeasures Electronics (ICE). At that time Neo-Macondo was a patchwork of reconstructed arcologies, built over the gray, decaying ruins of an urban landscape. The world was so recent that each thing had so many names one couldn't remember them all. To indicate them people pointed to a search engine.
If you are interested, I live-tweeted the experience of setting this instance up:
