I disagree with @gruber here. I think the internet is more like the sky than the Earth. The Earth is a singular thing, but the sky is defined by all of the elements in it. In that sense the internet is more like the sky than the Earth and therefore does not justify a capital I.

@johnsturgeon That's basically what I was thinking myself, about 10 years ago, when I followed the AP's lead and started lowercasing "internet”. What changed my mind is the growing realization that the Internet is a miracle. I think if there were alternate universes that were much like ours, most of them wouldn't have the Internet. Worldwide online connectivity would be controlled and gates by corporate owned-platforms.

@johnsturgeon I think lowercasing internet implies that of course it's there, like the sky.
