The point at which I knew we'd lost control of the word "toxic" was seeing a streamer bill himself as "Twitch's Most Toxic Player" as this badge of honor, and seeing a bunch of gamers use the word for any sort of mean-spirited trash talk as a sort of fancifying lingo.
@jplebreton, how much of this is a consequence of the pressure of self-promotion toward hyperbole? In an environment where all struggle for attention—good and bad—how can one keep from a kind of semantic inflation?
@lucasrizoli I think that's definitely part of it. People overuse "performative" a lot but a common kernel of truth is that people have very genuine feelings but reach for the language that will produce the biggest reaction.
