Spec-writing tip: Don't try to put requirements on (i.e. "MUST") both sides of a protocol or API function in the same section of a spec. You have to specify what each side does if the other side violates its requirements, and mixing the MUSTs will encourage you to fail in that responsibility.

Dear LazyWeb: Does buying into ssga.com/global/en/products-ca marginally increase the stock price of the companies (like buying an actual share of those companies' stock), or is it just a bet that their prices will rise with no resulting effect on the real world?

When I eventually move to a federated node, it would be great to be able to set up a redirect from this account...

Some interesting (and wrong imho) pushback on here at the moment, mostly from Gnusocialists saying "It's just flat out WRONG for one instance to ban another instance because of the bad behaviour of a few people on that instance!"

Well, no. Actually that's part of the excitingness of this place. Users will start self-sorting into instances which have the federation policies they want. Me, I don't want federation with instances which have assholes.

Birdsite can't give me that. Mastodon can.

The whole gift economy "it's free with no ads and Patreon will handle everything" doesn't strike me as capable of building and maintaining large systems. But maybe I'm wrong.

I'm expecting that either 1) Mastodon will stay fairly niche; 2) it'll be completely overwhelmed by trolls who either swamp individual instances' ability to moderate or swamp instances ability to vet their federations; or 3) it'll evolve some sort of arrangement of users paying instances which peer with each other, which will finance paid moderators and infrastructure developers.

Philips makes it very hard to buy their products. usa.philips.com/c-m-li/choose- shows a bunch of options that are only sold by sketchy folks on Amazon. The one modern one seems to be only available through Walmart...

technical note about this tech as I see some confusion/misconceptions:

Admins of your instance have complete control over your account. Really, we can read all the posts (including DMs) and we can even impersonate/hack your account with ease.

Make sure you trust your admins.

Here on toot.cat we have a CoC that applies to both admins and non admins. Admins are expected to abide by the CoC and not oppress users as well.

Also: to fix Masto latency issues, can we please get together and contribute PWA / Service Worker support to https://tootsuite/mastodon ? We have like 150 brilliant web folks here, surely we can do this! ⚡️

bet: the link to this tweet won't work in two years

icosahedron.website/users/Trev is why I'm worried about Mastodon being both payment-free and ad-free: is Patreon enough to support a popular website?

So ... how do I un-star or un-boost a toot?
