Anyway, I’m gonna take my own advice and try to get back to work. This queer history textbook isn’t gonna finish itself. 💜

Also, this should go without saying, but:

Posting violent photos without so much as even a CW is disrespectful and could cause harm. I know you may believe it important that “everyone knows what’s going on,” but consider the feelings of those who can’t take it first. People wanting to avoid violent images, especially for mental health reasons, are *not bad people*. Don’t treat them like they are.

So many of the people that follow me are marginalized, disabled, young, and likely scared out of their mind. This is mostly for y’all. Take stock of how you feel. Pay close attention to the positive things you have done and hold onto them. Put yourself first. Try to keep your thoughts in the present. Find solace and safety in *right now*. Worrying about the future is fruitless - and not your job.

I love you a whole lot and I think you’re great. You matter to me and it’s going to be okay.

Remember that there is only so much you can do as an individual and as a citizen. Tomorrow, consider writing down some potential options. You do not have to do anything. Not being able to do something doesn’t make you a bad person, nor does it make you complicit. If you feel compelled to do something, and if you feel you have the ability, consider writing down a plan of action.

Show thread

You do not have to have a plan of response. Lacking the ability to stop this does not make you a bad person. Needing to move on with your night does not make you selfish, or cowardly, or bad. Putting yourself first is not unhealthy, it is not selfish, it is not bad. Anyone who tries to tell you so does not care about you. Logging off is okay. Taking a break is okay. Your feelings are valid - consider writing them down or recording a voice memo.

Focusing on your work does not make you a bad person. Distracting yourself does not make you a bad person. Not being able to manage the psychological impact of these events does not make you a bad person. Not being equipped to come up with some kind of response to these events does not make you a bad person. Being scared and feeling powerless are not abnormal. If you are reading this, you are more than likely not responsible for what’s happened.

Especially tonight, you don’t need to seek validation for your feelings. Know that a whole lot of us are scared and that you aren’t alone.

Writing your feelings down is a valid way to process them, and keeping them gives you the ability to revisit them later. Remember that you will be able to revisit those thoughts later. Good or bad, you’ll be able to look back and recall how you felt. I’m sorta learning all this myself. Trying to process my feelings in a way that’s more for me and less for the benefit of an audience.

If you like the Twitter style of organizing your thoughts, creating a locked account that only you have access to may be helpful.

If you’re looking for a good journal/diary app:

I have been trying to journal more instead of oversharing lately. Find a journal app you trust, or start a Super Secret personal Twitter. If you’re panicking about world news and want to tweet about it, consider the impact those tweets may have on others around you. If you need a way to vent about things you’re scared of or feelings you want to get off your chest, journaling helps. I get so used to using this space as the way I process stuff that I forget that I can write things just for me.

Big ol' thread comin over from Twitter really quick, hang tight
