here's a good thing to tell school-age children: the textbooks they use to learn are made by people, and those people might gloss over or omit parts of the whole truth, accidentally or intentionally

basically just teach kids to be critical of their sources of info and ask really good questions

I saw someone here or on Twitter, I forget where, saying that it makes sense to refer to the Doctor as "they" now, and it's dawning on me that they're RIGHT.

We have a canonically genderfluid badass alien superhero right now, for whom "they" pronouns are appropriate, and like, WOW.

you know when your rub your hands on velcro? that's the same kind of feeling as listening to recordings of numbers stations.

Here's something most people might not know about:
In today's urban planning in most of the USA and Europe, there is a huge focus put on increasing the average citizen's 'calories burned'. This is one of the paradigms for making a healthy city: working walking or biking in to the daily habits of the citizens.

On one hand, this paradigms does contributing to building more walkable and bikable cities. But to me it's ablist and also anti fat... And, for a person in an electric wheelchair: calories burned is actually relating to battery power needed. For people with mobility issues, decreasing the calories needed to navigate is actually healthier.

"I really need to finish my books before I start new ones!"

NO. DON'T SAY THAT. Start all the books, freely and whenever you want, without hesitation.

Almon Strowger is best known for inventing the first deployed automatic telephone exchange in the late 1800s, but his main business was as an undertaker. He invented the exchange because he believed that a local manual-exchange operator, married to one of his competitors, was redirecting calls from his potential customers to her husband instead.

The net neutrality issue goes back a long, long time.

I'm off to Bern to coach programming beginners with DjangoGirls today! It's my second time doing this. Theoretically it's really cool and I'm sure I'll be excited about it later. Right now I'm mostly sleepy and uncaffeinated and not convinced I know anything about Python or web development at all.

#GenderWoes

I find men's pants [US: underpants] more comfortable, and there's such a big range but they all look REALLY REALLY BORING. 90% blue, black/grey, or combinations thereof.

Of course, this is because men are biologically evolutionarily programmed to look at the sky and into lakes and dark caves, because that was a gender role in prehistorical times. Men don't like that stuff because hunting and other masculine roles have no patterns or bright colours.

If you are in tech and identify outside of the gender binary please come (or speak) at this cool event I am running.

If you use Chrome, Google can use a network protocol for tracking and ad delivery that can't be seen or blocked by extensions. TL;DR: You really shouldn't use a web browser made by an ad company.

"AdBlock Plus, uBlock Origin, and other extensions cannot block QUIC requests. Recommended best practice is to disable QUIC from the chrome://flags/ URL."
