"Since they first appeared, ‘Smart Home’ devices have been marketed as faithful servants, ready to aid and assist their owners. The truth is that they have been designed to serve only the interests of capital as houses become assets. We need to start imagining digital technologies that could serve emancipatory projects aimed at ensuring homes for all that are not just ‘smarter’ but happier, safer and more secure" http://autonomy.work/portfolio/beware-the-smart-home/ #autonomyinstitute
I don't really need my house to be smart. I need it to be safer. Most deaths and accidents happen at home. The problems I have are not about needing a butlerbot to remind me to check the roast. I would like cutting stuff to be less perilous. I'd like to burn myself on hot pans less. I feel like smart home devices and applications are being created primarily by and for people who do little to no care work inside the home.
@kavbojka good story on the topic https://motherboard.vice.com/en_us/article/59vex5/be-good-for-goodness-sake
