In a 23-1 vote, Google vetoes Web Privacy Proposals at the W3C

I think the news broke.
Last week I read about a variant of the virus with multiple mutations in the region coding the spike protein our vaccines target, indicating they may not be as effective.
Now I find no trace of this.
Hours ago I read in WaPo that a Senate impeachment conviction is a ridiculous fantasy, and now I read on CNN that it's basically a foregone conclusion.
I'm extremely tired of all of this and I would like to trust better-informed people to drive and just write my letters about causes I care about.
But I also kinda feel like I'll never take anyone at their word ever again.
What a ridiculous, exhausting five years.
@pamela I was upgrading the PSU on my server a couple weeks ago. Also tried adding a GPU to it, but it wouldn't fit in the chassis, so I set it aside. Got everything back together, tried booting up the server; boot loops. Took 10 minutes of trouble shooting before I realized where "aside" was for the GPU: *on the keyboard*. 🤦♂️
For #InternationalMensDay I want to share this reprint of an old poster circulating in german autonomous spaces in the 80s - It is definitely not perfect, but I've had it hanging in my old flat and it resonated with a lot of people who were not in the habit of questioning concepts like hegemonial masculinity. It roughly translates to:
"For centuries we had to be strong to fight for our honour in wars, the factory or the office. When we don't give orders, we follow them!
Violence against others is normal for many of us. Every third woman will experience sexualized violence in her lifetime!
But enough is enoug!
An end to strength, honour and all that shit! Let us finally learn to live as humans, self-determined and in solidarity, instead of constantly asserting ourselves as a man.
MEN! Understand the patriarchy as an attack on your humanity (as well)"
Encryption only works in 1:1 chats, only using the Google Messages app, only for Beta users... Why bother using RCS at all, if the magic happens at the app layer? There are better protocols (cough @email@example.com cough) that aren't held back by MNO shackles! https://www.theverge.com/2020/11/19/21574451/android-rcs-encryption-message-end-to-end-beta
The Internet Archive have added a WebAssembly-based Flash emulator to their emulation suite, and are preserving 2000s-vintage Flash games, playable in a modern HTML5-capable browser:
@aral well geeze! I've already been working to migrate to self-hosted services in place of Google's offerings, but I hadn't realized I should be migrating my accounts away from my Gmail. Thanks for the wake-up call!
We had a breakthrough! Synapse can now horizontally scale across multiple Python processes, with message sending no longer going via the main proc. This has spectacularly improved perf on http://Matrix.org over the last few weeks🎉 Read all about it: https://matrix.org/blog/2020/11/03/how-we-fixed-synapses-scalability
My advice if you ever work for free for anyone: write them an invoice with the REAL value, and then add a 100% discount.
Even when you work for free, you want people to know that this work has value, some real one :)
Business model: Hi, I’m a poison apple.
UX team: Right, let’s dip this baby in sweet candy and shove a stick into it.
Business model: I’m still a poison apple.
UX team: Yeah, but now they can’t taste the poison.
