selfie, eye contact, wooden mallets

…two different people independently gave me wooden mallets today, for two different reasons.

i found out in code review today that i wrote some code that was accidentally quad-rat-ic

alcohol

Picked up a bottle of a Mastiha, a liqueur from the Greek island of Chios made from the sap of the mastic trees. It's piney but very mildly so. I need to figure out what I should mix it with, because it's got lots of potential.

sometimes i get an idea in my head and it just won't leave until i make it a reality, so anyway, i made this today

My money-making idea for Slack: they should let people pay for Slack Classic UI, which is just Slack as it existed around 2016. Monetize rolling back your usability regressions!

…I think I've tooted variations on this sentiment like four times already, but I've felt it several dozen times in between each tooted version.

It's just deeply disappointing to see some beautiful art intended for a video game that depicts a place I want to explore and inhabit, and then dig in a bit deeper and learn that the game is all about fighting some monsters.

Unnecessary Fantasy Grousing

This is of course 98% because the LotR movies skipped the Scouring of the Shire and rendered the story corny heroic good-versus-evil fantasy, so I can't blame people for forgetting it, but I feel like LotR-the-books deserve better.

Unnecessary Fantasy Grousing

I try not to have pet peeves, in general, but one that I don't think I'll ever shake is when people talk about the Lord of the Rings books as 'corny heroic good-versus-evil fantasy' when 80% of the last volume is about how first Frodo fails, then the Big Bad explodes but it doesn't fix everything, then Frodo and Sam have to chase a bunch of cops out of the Shire, and then Frodo never gets over his PTSD from the events.

Anyway, I love mushrooms (both aesthetically and culinarily) and I love messy watercolors.

Back when someone gifted me disposable shot glasses that look like red Solo cups, I was just offended that they so greatly misjudged what kind of person I am, but luckily it turns out they're great water containers for painting.

A good name for a Text User Interface library just in case any programmer out there needs one: banjo-tui

The thing I've been working on recently is now open source! Namely, Sorbet, a standalone static type-checker for Ruby: sorbet.org/blog/2019/06/20/ope

(If you read the paper, be warned for the bizarre and completely-out-of-left-field sexism that shows up at the end.)

As a linguist and person interested in esoterica, I of course had to read the new Voynich decipherment paper. …I genuinely don't understand why this one is getting traction. It's not even one of the better attempts.

My swimming advice is that you should always be repeating the name of the stroke you're doing as you swim, aloud if possible, as a redundant reminder that helps keep the details of the stroke in your head. This is called Hungarian Natation.

old selfie, food

It's years old at this point, but I stumbled across this picture of me eating a candy orange slice and I I still really like it for some reason. It really captures… something, at least.

I need to do pixel art practice more often. Here's a quick book, candle, and wooden mug.

I love webcomics and I have been reading them for just shy of 20 years now, and I still cannot explain why so many webcomic artists produce such bad T-shirts.
