I have a similar problem with questions like "how are you?" in a casual context. I'm not really okay most of the time, but I usually have no desire to talk about it. I also don't want to answer with a lie. So how do I respond without making things awkward? I wish it wasn't considered normal in our culture to ask something so personal out of the blue.
Found an interesting (but old) article today titled "Why Russians do not smile", and it kinda resonated with me:
In our Western culture there's this constant need to reassure each other that we mean well, and I get that - I do the same by instinct. But it can be dishonest and I understand how someone might even consider it offensive.
